Summer Walker Receives Backlash Over HIV Comment on Instagram

Summer Walker is under fire for some comments she made following an incident where her laptop got stolen on a flight to Los Angeles. “Whoever stole my laptop off that LA flight last night can suck a fat stankin uncircumcised HIV infested d*ck,” the singer posted, followed by a smiley face emoji.

HIV positive, activist Dana White responded to the singer, “I’ve been living with HIV since Summer Walker was 11 years old and longer than her career will last. My immune system is stronger than her live performances. Good morning.”

HIV stigma is usually not something people are interested in unlearning until the virus impacts them directly. Summer Walker’s words were offensive, yes, but also sad because 1 in 48 Black women may be diagnosed in their lifetime.

The heat didn’t stop there, many social media users chimed in to tell their opinion on the singer’s comments. “Summer Walker is wishing HIV on people. I’m just so disgusted… I’m sure plenty of fans of hers are living with HIV. Just think about the message that it sends to them. This furthers stigmas like believing that people with HIV are “dirty” & the worst thing to exist,” said one tweet.

“As much as I thought I enjoyed summer walker as an artist. I no longer follow that human. Just little-minded and ill mentally. It shows. Her career is nearly over,” said another upset user.

“Feeling that people deserve to get HIV because of their choices, is a prime example of HIV stigma,” said The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Summer Walker has yet to speak out and address her comments.
