Tiffany Boone Speaks Out After Leaving ‘The Chi’: “I felt that if I didn’t speak up, other voices that were trying to be heard would be silenced”

Baltimore actress Tiffany Boone left Showtime’s The Chi back in November of 2018, after accusing co-star Jason Mithell of sexual harassment.

Last May, Mitchell was terminated from the show following the accusations put out from Boone and showrunner, Ayanna Floyd Davis. In a recent post on Instagram, Boone further elaborated on her reasons behind leaving the show. “You don’t carelessly leave a ‘hit show’ that is praised by your community.” I deeply love Chicago and the people of that city who have embraced me. I felt honored and privileged to be part of telling their story. The weight of what I was leaving behind felt like a ton, but the weight of my responsibility to speak up was even heavier. There were people who questioned my decision. How could I be sure I would work again, especially on a project of that magnitude? I wasn’t sure, but I had faith that once I took that leap I could be guided wherever I was supposed to go.”

Not only was Mitchell released from The Black Reel Winning show, but he was also released from the Netflix movie Desperados following similar accusations from multiple actresses. He was also let go from his talent agency, UTA.

I wasn’t raised to quit jobs. Yet, a day came when I had to be brutally honest with myself about what I was willing to sacrifice just to have a job. Was I able to compromise my values, integrity, and happiness, just to be employed?” said Boone in her statement.

Boone departed from her role on The Chi in its second season. She mentioned that she had gone to HR during season 1 of the show, but felt that her concerns regarding the incident were ignored. “However, once we started filming, I quickly realized that not everyone was interested in creating a work environment that was conducive to each person feeling safe, seen and heard,” Boone wrote. “I felt that if I didn’t speak up, other voices that were trying to be heard would be silenced,” she stated.

Boone is now cast in Jordan Peele’s Amazon Series Hunters and Little Fires Everywhere on Hulu. The Chi will begin its third season on July 5th.
