Right before her 1972 ESC triumph with “Apres Toi”, Vicky released in the end of 1971 “Wenn die Sehnsucht nicht waer'” as a 7″ single (Cat. No. Philips 6000 030), which is the German version of “Anamniseis” (“Αναμνήσεις”). On the flip side we find “Nur bei dir” or “Otan eimai konta sou” if you prefer in Greek (both included on the 1972 “Mono Esy” Greek LP). The two versions, though, had different level of acceptance: While in Greece “Anamniseis” was a huge hit and one of the most memorable Vicky’s songs from her 70’s era (recently, even a Greek hip-hop group used samples of the original recording in one of their songs), in Germany sadly was a flop and never included in an official album (except in 1972 “Meine Welt” Club compilation LP, which now is quite rare and difficult to find). It’s strange why this magnificent song, one of Vicky’s all time best, had in its German version so bad luck. Who knows, maybe the Greek version was more appealing, even to German fans. Personally I love both versions. Especially I have connected the German one with the marvellous video, already uploaded in YT, of the from August 1971 IFA Berlin live performance by Vicky, who does a wonderful job. I dare to say that this early version (perhaps slightly before the official release of the single) is better and I like Vicky’s live performance more than the studio one. In this video you can enjoy the absolute Vicky of the early 70’s!! In the video we see single’s front paper cover with Vicky singing live. Notice the “hippy” style multicolored dress. Indeed very groovy!! On the back, advertisements of various Philips label German schlager artists, as usually. Also we see the A-side of the single. At the end a beautiful photo of a sad melancholic Vicky (circa 1970-71), which I find so appropriate with the mood of the song.
The equipment used for the transfer is Dual CS-505-3 turntable with Ortofon OM10 cartridge, a home made phono stage using Burr Brown OPA2134 dual op-amp and styroflex caps, carefully hand-picked for best accuracy of the RIAA curve, and the internal AC-97 soundcard of my desktop PC with Audacity as the recording software. Between line-in of the PC and the output of the phono preamp, I used a single vacuum tube home made line preamplifier. It was made with a single double-triode vintage GE 12AU7 (ECC82) tube from the 50’s and IRF610A MOSFET’s. I discovered that the my old Dual with it’s carbon fibre headshell and ultra-light tonearm tracks much better worn records and 45’s, that’s why I deleted the previous upload. Now the sound has much more resolution with less groove distortion, which in some places, though, is still audible.
Now, about the sound quality of this 45rpm single, we can say that it’s adequate regarding the format and its age. There’s also some inner groove distortion, which becomes more evident towards the end, probably the result of groove wear. Also the recording level is quite high, tending to some degree of clipping, usual for a 45 like that.
I decided to upload the German version and dedicate it to the German friends and Vicky’s fans, hoping they like and re-evaluate it after 40 yrs.
Enjoy!
