Diplo Confirms Usher’s “Climax” Draws Inspo From The Weeknd’s ‘House of Balloons,’ The Weeknd Responds

The Internet was buzzing when The Weeknd’s interview with Variety was released and he basically alluded that Usher bit his style from his debut project, House of Balloons.

“I heard ‘Climax,’ that [2012] Usher song, and was like, ‘Holy f—, that’s a Weeknd song.’ It was very flattering, and I knew I was doing something right, but I also got angry. But the older I got, I realized it’s a good thing.” This claim didn’t sit right with R&B lovers who have been listening to Usher for the past two decades.

For The Weeknd to even listen to Usher’s vocals on Climax and think hey, that’s what I do… is wild to me

I’m so sick of these peasants speaking on Usher’s name 😭😭😭. Climax couldn’t be a Weeknd song because it’s in key. Please. https://t.co/TCu6Dfhix4

The outlet reported that Usher declined to comment but he made a subtle response by launching the #ClimaxChallenge. But before he did, he posted a video of himself laying on his back effortlessly flexing the high keys on the song.

Diplo, who served as a producer for the song, confirmed that he did draw inspiration from the Toronto singer when creating the beat.

the production on Climax lends itself to House of Balloons era @theweeknd. when I heard those early records they blew my mind – soulful in their silences, and a spacey iconic voice that felt uniquely internet. the idea of R&B having dark edges was what I wanted to bring to @usher

Of course, The Weeknd was happy he had a friend and weighed in on Diplo’s comments, claiming the media took his quote out of proportion. “Of course media blows things out of proportion and takes things out of context. Usher is a King and always an inspiration so it was flattering to hear what him and Diplo did on climax. XO”
