Steph Curry’s Dad Told The Warriors Not To Draft Him Back In 2009

It’s hard to imagine Steph Curry on any other team than the Golden State Warriors although back in 2009 he almost ended up on the New York Knicks thanks to his father Dell Curry. Dell can now be seen cheering on his son while proudly wearing a Warriors jersey even though there was a point where he was urging the Warriors not to pick Steph. In a recent interview, Dell revealed that he spoke to Warriors head coach Don Nelson back in 2009 before the draft and told them to pass up on Curry as he believed their system didn’t fit with what Steph wanted.

“Don’t,” Dell told Nelson. “You asked me the question, I’ll tell you the truth. Don’t (draft him).”

Dell explained that the Knicks had a faster style of play and had more cohesion in the locker room at the time which was more attractive to Steph. Regardless of the advice, the Warriors selected Steph which turned out to be a huge blessing. Even Steph’s mom Sonya had reservations about him heading off to Oakland.

“Golden State was too far away,” she said. “Where’s my baby going? I don’t know where Golden State is!”

Good thing the Warriors didn’t listen because now they have three NBA Titles in the last four years and are going for another one this season.
