Kings County Hospital, Servicing Mostly Black People, is Washing Out Masks for their Workers with Hand Sanitizer

According to the New York Times, medical professionals at Brooklyn’s Kings County Hospital Center have said that they have resorted to re-using masks and layering them with hand sanitizer as a disinfectant between shifts, having to use the same masks (that are meant to be disposable) for an entire week.

A nurse at the Montefiore Medical Center in the Bronx said that the nurses there are also being asked to re-use the masks.

Health care providers are already in danger because they are exposed to so many sick people. Added that the nation is experiencing a shortage of supplies, they are resorting to creative ways to stay as safe as possible.

Masks, medical gloves, and ventilators are priorities. New York’s governor, Andrew Cuomo has been pushing for federal aid, particularly for the ventilators.

“I understand the federal government’s point that many companies have come forward and said we want to help, and General Motors and Ford and people are willing to get into the ventilator business. It does us no good if they start to create a ventilator in three weeks or four weeks or five weeks. We’re looking at an apex of 14 days. … The [Defense Production Act] can actually help companies because the federal government can say, ‘Look, I need you to go into this business. I will contract with you today for x number of ventilators. Here’s the startup capital you need.’ … Not to exercise that power is inexplicable to me.”

“I will take personal responsibility for transporting the ventilators”

It is true. When American coughs, Black folk surely will catch a cold.
