Kim Foxx’s Deputies Submit Resignations Following Jussie Smollett Debacle

Jussie Smollett’s case has been a rollercoaster ride to follow. Charges for filing a false police report were dropped against the actor but the city of Chicago has pursued legal action over the six-figure costs for the investigation. The decision to drop the charges put a negative spotlight on the State’s Attorney, Kim Foxx, who’s also serving as the prosecutor in R. Kelly’s case. Foxx has been facing a severe amount of backlash which has reportedly prompted two top executives from her office to submit resignations from their positions.

The ethics officer for Kim Foxx’s office, April Perry, and special prosecutor, Mark Rotert, have submitted resignations from their positions in wake of Smollett’s charges getting dropped. Perry submitted her resignation on Monday, Page Six reports. A day after news broke that the State Attorney’s dropped the charges against Smollett, Rotert submitted his resignation, according to The Chicago Sun-Time.

The resignation from the two executives is in wake of the severe backlash over the way Smollett’s case was handled as well as the prompting the internal review over the investigation and her recusal from the case.

Perry was the one who announced Foxx’s recusal from the case in an e-mail to staffers. “Please note that State’s Attorney Kim Foxx is recused from the investigation involving victim Jussie Smollett. First Assistant State’s Attorney Joe Magats is serving as the Acting State’s Attorney for this matter,” it read.
