DeRay McKesson Contacted Daniel Caesar After His YesJulz Commentary

Daniel Caesar caught the wrath of the Internet when he defended YesJulz a week after she offended Black women in the Hip-Hop community while attempting to defend her own miscues.
Caesar stated in an Instagram Live session, “Why are we being so mean to Julz? Why are being so mean to white people?” The perceived belief that the Black community was attacking white people in the culture for nothing, led to a collective, social media spanning dragging session.

“Why is that we’re allowed to be disrespectful and rude to everybody else, and when anybody returns any type of energy to us—that’s not equality. I don’t want to be treated like I can’t take a joke!”

Well, Mr. Caesar you have learned this situation is far from a joke.

After the onslaught of savage slander that attacked everything from his thought process to his appearance, social activist Deray McKesson revealed he spoke with Daniel Caesar, resulting in the singer “learning & growing.”

I spoke w/ Daniel Caesar yesterday morning for a few hours as I was troubled by many of his statements from the IG video. In the end, it is clear that he’s learning & growing re: understanding *systemic* racism & has more work to do. & he has begun to do that work.

We had a frank convo about how his statements disappointed many, reinforced a set of beliefs that did not aid the work of racial equity, & highlighted opportunities to learn. We were both pushed in the convo & it was good. I look forward to seeing him continue to reflect/grow.

The only social media activity to come from Daniel Caesar after the uproar is an IG story upload showing sand crabs. Hopefully, Caesar issues some sort of a resolution soon.
